Gonzalez dismantles the ketogenic diet for cancer. In early 2. 01. 2, I started to see some chatter online about the ketogenic diet as a potential anti- cancer diet. Mercola's Nutrition Plan will give you tips on healthy eating and exercise, as well as other lifestyle strategies to help you achieve optimal health. I’ve understood for many years that different diets work for different people, and I was intrigued by this as another possible dietary strategy to heal cancer, so naturally I shared information about it on this site, thinking it might be a viable option for some. At that time there were no other sites as large as mine talking about it. In 2. 01. 3, awareness of the keto diet exploded, mostly do to Dr. Mercola’s articles, interviews and endorsement of it. Since then, many others have jumped on the bandwagon. And at first glance, there is a compelling hypothesis which presents the ketogenic diet as a method to starve cancer cells of their primary fuel, glucose, thus killing the cancer. Despite the zealous promoters of it, some of whom I have great respect for, my opinion of the ketogenic diet for cancer has changed. It started with several long phone conversations and email exchanges I had with cancer healing expert friend who was adamant that the ketogenic diet did not work in healing cancer long term. This coincided with the recurrence of cancer in someone I knew who was promoting the ketogenic diet as effective.
It appeared to have some positive short term results for some people (shrinking or slowing down tumors), but I was beginning to have some doubts about it working long term. This uneasiness persisted for many months and I could not shake it. So I finally made the decision to take down my very popular post and youtube video about it. Then came the coup de grace from Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez MD in October 2. Addendum: Dr. Gonzalez passed away in 2. Dr. Gonzalez and his colleague Dr. Diet Time By Vivien WadeDiet Times To EatLinda Isaacs MD have had remarkable success treating cancer patients with a non- toxic nutritional protocol that incorporates some Gerson principles along with the late Dr. William Donald Kelley’s protocol which includes high doses of pancreatic enzymes and individualized diets depending on body type and cancer type. I have huge respect for them, not because of their theories, but because they are getting RESULTS, including reversing “incurable” stage four cancers. Intermittent fasting diet for fat loss, muscle gain and health. Articles, research, diet advice, and free guides from IF-expert, Martin Berkhan. News evaluated 38 of the most popular diets and identified the best. Find which top-rated diet is best for your health and fitness goals. Dr. Gonzalez wrote an eight part article series for Natural Health 3. Gonzalez’s nutritional cancer treatment expertise is much deeper than ANYONE currently promoting the ketogenic diet for cancer, because unlike anyone else promoting it, he actually treats cancer patients with nutrition every day. There are thousands of people out there who have healed cancer naturally. I meet natural survivors constantly and even share their stories on this site. Most natural cancer healing protocols involve a radical change of diet and lifestyle that includes overdosing on nutrition with juicing, lots of raw plant food, little to no animal food, supplements, and herbal cleanses along with detox protocols like coffee enemas, etc. Those are all time- tested methods validated by a large body of long- term survivors. I know a lot of long- term natural survivors, but I don’t know of any long- term survivors who have used a ketogenic diet to heal. I’ve seen studies where rats on a ketogenic diet lived a little longer, then died. Survivors trump scientific theories. And until we have a substantial list of long- term survivors, I cannot in good conscience support ketogenic diet as a viable option for healing cancer. I am perfectly ok with being proven wrong, and if so, will freely admit it, but it will be at least 1. Having said all that, if the plant- based nutritional protocol that I and so many others have used successfully to heal, did not work, I would certainly be open to try the ketogenic diet. It just wouldn’t be my first choice. Here is a short interview with Jonathan Landsman of Natural Health 3. Dr. Gonzalez explains why he thinks a ketogenic diet doesn’t work for cancer. Gonzalez uses nutrition to treat cancer, and puts his patients on a variety of diets based on their cancer and other factors. If the ketogenic diet worked, this is a doctor who would be using it. If you want to take a deep dive, Dr. Gonzalez masterfully dismantles the ketogenic diet for cancer in the lengthy article below. This is not a scientific rebuttal, quibbling over theories about Warburg, glycosis, cell respiration, and ATP, rather it is a thoughtful, well- reasoned reflection from a doctor who has been in the trenches of nutritional cancer treatment for nearly three decades. His real world experience, insider knowledge, historical perspective and common sense put him head and shoulders above the lab- rat researchers and theorizers, no offense guys/gals. The following article, which first appeared on Natural Health 3. Nicholas Gonzalez. In this initial article, I’d like to begin by making the point that the world of cancer research and cancer medicine is littered with the discarded theories and rejected therapies thought at one time to be the next promising miracle, the final answer to this perplexing and deadly disease. In my own professional lifetime, I have witnessed a number of cancer miracles come and go, sometimes in quite dizzying succession and at times with extraordinarily dazzling hysteria. I remember one of the first, from 1. I was a first year medical student at Cornell; in this case, it was, according to the press and the journals, the magic of interferon, an immune stimulant destined to bring cancer to its knees. Not too long afterward, interferon would turn out to be a bust, with its promise and fame rising and falling in roller coaster- like style. I lived through a far more extraordinary situation just five years later. I had graduated medical school by that point and was living in Florida, finishing my immunology fellowship under Robert A. Good, MD, Ph. D, the famed “father of modern immunology” as he had been called. It was late 1. 98. I was sitting in my apartment overlooking beautiful Tampa Bay, when I read the initial front- page newspaper reports. Steven Rosenberg, already well- known as Ronald Reagan’s surgeon (the President had a malignant polyp), and a highly regarded basic science researcher running a section at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, had just revealed to the world – at a press conference, as I remember – his preliminary pilot study results with a new immune modulator, interleukin- 2, that would provoke an extraordinary media frenzy. The initial pronouncements, released with such glowing enthusiasm, indicated that finally, yes finally, after so many disappointments we might actually be looking at a real, universal cancer cure. In both laboratory and preliminary human trials, interleukin- 2 – like interferon before it, a natural product secreted by lymphocytes that stimulates other cancer- fighting immune cells into action – had performed almost magically against even the most aggressive of cancers, such as metastatic melanoma and metastatic kidney cancer. News of Dr. Rosenberg’s “miracle” was everywhere, in the print media, on the local and national news, and in an extended Newsweek story appearing December 1. Dr. Rosenberg on the cover peering intently at the world. The article, titled “Search for A Cure” in large bold print went on for six pages, accompanied by photos of Dr. Rosenberg, one with a patient, another as the serious scientist in the lab. Elaborate, colorful artwork illustrated the narrative, showing the intricate mechanisms of the immune system, and pinpointing interleukin- 2’s ability, under the guiding hand of Dr. Rosenberg, to fight malignant disease. A separate subsection headlined “The Rise of a Superstar, From Reagan’s surgery to the frontiers of research” chronicled the compelling life story of Dr. You couldn’t buy better publicity than this. At the end of this piece, the writers did include a brief section titled “Interferon: A Cautionary Tale,“ reminding readers of the hoopla five years earlier over that other immune modulator, which too had been all the rage in the cancer research world. The essay, following the main laudatory articles, began: To some ears, last week’s exultation over interleukin- 2 has a familiar but discordant ring. Something similar happened about five years ago with a substance called interferon, the “magic bullet” of cancer research, featured on magazine covers and in articles with titles like “To Save Her Life – And Yours.” . Good, had done much of the original research linking it to a possible anti- cancer effect. By that point, I knew Dr. Good quite well: during my second year of medical school, Dr. Good, at the time a professor at Cornell and Director of the Sloan- Kettering Institute, had begun guiding my fledgling research career. In 1. 98. 2, during my third year of medical school, to my dismay the powers that be at Sloan pushed him out rather unceremoniously. Subsequently, he spent some time at the University of Oklahoma, where he was hired to set up a cancer research division, before moving to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, where again he established a cancer research- bone marrow transplant unit. When the news of interleukin- 2 first hit the press, I discussed this new “miracle” with Dr. Good, who had grown quite cautious after years of experience and having witnessed many similar announcements followed by the inevitable letdown in the research community.“Look at the data, always look at the data,” he said, “not the media reports.” I followed his advice, tracked down and studied the actual clinical data, which I found surprisingly unimpressive. As I recall, in the first uncontrolled trial, of more than 1. In subsequent months, reports of enormous toxicity, even patient deaths began to filter through the research community, serving to temper the initial hysteria. And it wasn’t cheap, as miracles go – the very toxic drug was so potentially dangerous it had to be administered in a hospital setting under very close supervision, with costs running in excess of $1. Artificial Sweeteners - - More Dangerous than You Ever Imagined. By Dr. Mercolave. If you still believe sweeteners like Equal and Nutra. Sweet are safe, you'll want to pay very close attention to this special report. You're probably aware of the dangers of consuming too much sugar and that sugar is not healthy for you. You might have been led to believe that artificial sweeteners like aspartame are safer and less likely to cause you to gain weight. Well, neither of those beliefs is true. Slick marketing of products containing aspartame by giants in the food industry - - especially marketing that sends the message it's healthy to consume these products - - might be giving you a false sense of security. Workplace weight loss programs and eating disorders, giving a reference for a coworker who drinks heavily, and more. It may not feel like news when scientists uncover more evidence that fruits and vegetables are healthy. But Americans seem to need every shred of science to convince. Summary: In Chapter 11 bankruptcy (reorganization) after reports of 6+ month delays, $55.8M owed creditors You might even be convinced you're doing the right thing for your health and the health of your family by using products artificially sweetened with aspartame. You couldn't be more mistaken. It's not pleasant to learn that corporations, government- sponsored regulatory agencies, and politicians are more interested in lining their pockets than protecting your health and the health of your loved ones. But unfortunately, these are serious issues that you must consider for your and your family's safety. Manufacturers, marketers, and others with financial interests have successfully convinced millions of consumers the chemicals used in artificially sweetened products are safe. The arguments used to convince you these ingredients are healthy and . Remember: If you're consuming a food or beverage created in a lab instead of by nature, you can be assured your body doesn't recognize it. This opens the door to short- term and long- lasting health problems for you and your family. If you already avoid aspartame, the information you're about to read will confirm the wise choice you've made, and cement your resolve to stay away from any product that contains this potential toxin. An Accident Waiting to Happen: The Birth of Aspartame. Like an omen, aspartame was discovered in 1. Searle chemist James M. Schlatter was at work in his laboratory developing a drug to treat peptic ulcer disease. The story goes that Schlatter accidentally spilled one of the chemicals he was using onto his finger. He licked his finger clean, and in doing so discovered the sweet taste of the aspartame he had spilled. This inauspicious beginning heralded the birth of what has become one of the most potentially dangerous and controversial food additives in human history. How Aspartame Got to Market in Spite of Itself. As you're about to learn, the tale of how aspartame got to market is a disturbing one. It reads like a crime mystery. One you would assume is based on the author's over- active imagination. Except it's all true. The approval process for aspartame was said to have been riddled with scandal, bribes, and other shady dealings within the pharmaceutical industry, large American corporations, and the FDA. Initially, the FDA strongly denied the approval of aspartame products. Reasons given were sound and included: Flawed data. Brain tumor findings in animal studies. Lack of studies on humans to determine longer- term effects How aspartame got to market despite initial FDA concerns and evidence of its neurotoxicity is a study in good timing, heavy financial investment, and the impact of political clout. Timing Is Everything. Aspartame studies were on the rise just after cyclamate was pulled from the U. S. The disappearance of cyclamate left a void it appeared saccharin might not be poised to fill. At the time of the cyclamate ban, the . Searle spent tens of millions of dollars to conduct the necessary approval tests on aspartame. Kelly Nocero Lost 100 Pounds: Chia seeds are a nutritious pseudo grain that can be part of a healthy weight loss plan. But they’re not a quick fix to drop a dress size. And if you eat too many. Not surprisingly, studies funded by Searle and other groups with a financial interest in aspartame found no adverse health effects. However, independent studies delivered evidence that aspartame consumption did indeed create health problems in test subjects. Flexing Political Muscle. In addition to its enormous financial investment in favorable study results, Searle developed what can be fairly described as a diabolical political strategy to insure the FDA would end up with a positive view of aspartame. Deceptive Safety Studies. G. D. Searle provided the FDA with over 1. Grapefruit's slimming benefits are hardly breaking news. But many people have yet to discover the plethora of ways to eat the detoxing, debloating fruit. Later that same year, the FDA asked for additional studies. Searle complied, and in June 1. FDA granted preliminary approval for the restricted use of aspartame. The study findings submitted by Searle were immediately challenged by Dr. John Olney, a neuroscientist who was instrumental in getting monosodium glutamate removed from baby foods, and Jim Turner, an attorney and consumer advocate. In August 1. 97. 4, Olney and Turner filed the first formal objections to the approval of aspartame. Their petition prompted the FDA to initiate investigations into Searle's lab practices. The investigations ultimately led to concerns within the FDA about the validity of the studies submitted by Searle. Investigators uncovered substandard testing procedures and manipulated test data. In fact, what investigators found at Searle was an unprecedented incidence of bad testing procedures and inaccurate results. Final approval of aspartame was delayed. Based on the results of these findings, in January 1. FDA requested a criminal investigation into a food manufacturer for willfully misrepresenting results in their safety tests of a product. The FDA asked the U. S. Attorney's office to examine Searle's handling of aspartame testing. In August 1. 97. 7, the FDA published a report by Jerome Bressler which pointed to specific issues with Searle's aspartame safety studies.
The Bressler Report revealed stunning examples of very bad research. A few examples included: Deceased lab animals were not immediately autopsied, some not for an entire year after death. Decomposition rendered any data from them inaccurate. Searle arranged to hire away the U. S. Attorney leading the investigation. Samuel Skinner went to work for Searle in July. Skinner's resignation from the U. S. Attorney's office stalled the investigation into Searle's aspartame studies until the statute of limitations expired. The investigation was subsequently abandoned. In March 1. 97. 7, Donald Rumsfeld was hired as the CEO of Searle - - yes, the same Rumsfeld that was the Secretary of Defense in the Bush administration. He brought with him additional political clout by appointing several of his D. C. Two months later, in March, Dr. Hayes appointed an internal panel to review the 1. Public Board of Inquiry that ruled thumbs down on final approval of Nutra. Sweet. Three of the five members of Dr. Hayes' panel advised against approval of aspartame, citing on the record that Searle's safety study tests were flawed. Hayes then appointed a sixth member to the panel who tied the vote three- three. Hayes then cast the deciding vote in favor of approval. Hayes, an official with no background on the subject of food additives, claimed aspartame was safe for proposed use, and had undergone more testing and scientific scrutiny than most additives on the market. Shortly after approving this drug he resigned from the FDA panel and was hired by the manufacturer of aspartame for a position in which he was paid several hundred thousand dollars per year. So, despite all the game playing and countless unresolved safety issues, aspartame was approved for use in soft drinks in the fall of 1. Less than a year later, the FDA had recorded 6. The unprecedented number of complaints caused the FDA to call in the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). The CDC concluded adverse reactions to aspartame were occurring in . It is one of the first generation of artificial sweeteners and is 1. At the end of 2. 00. The scientific name for aspartame is 1- aspartyl 1 phenylalanine methyl ester. It has three components: Phenylalanine which makes up 5. Aspartic acid - - 4. Methanol (wood alcohol) - - 1. How Aspartame Acts Inside Your Body. The two primary components of aspartame, phenylalanine and aspartic acid, are amino acids that are combined in an ester bond. You normally consume these two amino acids in the foods you eat. These amino acids are harmless when consumed as part of natural unprocessed foods. However, when they are chemically manipulated and consumed out of the normal ratios to other amino acids, they can cause problems. Your body initially breaks down the ester link between the two amino acids to turn them into free amino acids. The neurotoxic effects of these chemicals in their . However, the high concentration of these chemicals in the form of aspartame floods your central nervous system and can cause excessive firing of brain neurons. Cell death is also possible. This is a condition called excitotoxicity. Your body doesn't recognize phenylalanine and aspartic acid in their free form, but your system will try to manage them through metabolization. Whenever your body tries to process an unrecognizable substance, the stage is set for health problems. The chemicals in aspartame will be absorbed by your intestinal cells, where they will be broken down into other amino acids and byproducts. A large percentage of the absorbed chemicals will be used immediately in your small intestine. A Formaldehyde Cocktail. Ultimately, aspartame will be fully absorbed into your body. Ten percent of what is absorbed is the breakdown product methanol (wood alcohol). The EPA defines safe consumption of this toxin as 7. It's not the amino acids themselves or the methanol that are toxic to your system. It's the breakdown products they turn into along the way - - either during transport, on the store shelf, or during the metabolization process. Stored at warm temperatures or for a prolonged period of time, phenylalanine turns into diketopiperazine, a known carcinogen. Methanol can spontaneously break down to formaldehyde, also a toxin, which can accumulate in your cells and result in severe health consequences. Methanol is found naturally in some of the foods you eat. However, it is never bound to amino acids in nature, as it is as an ingredient in aspartame. In the world of health and fitness, we hear about people wanting to lose weight much more often than we hear about people trying to.Vegetarian Diet Plan for Bodybuilding. Most bodybuilders get the extra protein they need to support their intense training regimens from animal sources.
Building a muscular physique is possible using vegetarian sources of protein. Like meat- eating bodybuilders, vegetarian bodybuilders precisely time their meals and spend time preparing their food plans. A vegetarian bodybuilder may have to incorporate a few extra strategies to support his goals, but he can avoid animal products and still be a formidable competitor. The features of a vegetarian bodybuilding diet depends on the type of vegetarian diet followed. Medline Plus outlines three primary vegetarians: the vegan, who excludes all meat and animal products; the lacto vegetarian, who eats some dairy along with plant foods; and the lacto- ovo vegetarian, who eats both dairy and eggs along with plant foods. Vegan bodybuilders face the most challenges in obtaining proper nutrition, but they can still obtain all the necessary vitamins, minerals and amino acids required to build muscle. Get rid of heartburn and GERD forever in three simple steps. Note: this is the sixth and final article in a series about heartburn and GERD. If you haven’t done so already, you’ll want to read Part I, Part II, Part III, and Part IVa, and Part IVb before reading this article. In this final article of the series, we’re going to discuss three steps to treating heartburn and GERD without drugs. These same three steps will also prevent these conditions from developing in the first place, and keep them from returning once they’re gone. To review, heartburn and GERD are not caused by too much stomach acid. They are caused by too little stomach acid and bacterial overgrowth in the stomach and intestines. Therefore successful treatment is based on restoring adequate stomach acid production and eliminating bacterial overgrowth. This can be accomplished by following the “three Rs” of treating heartburn and GERD naturally: Reduce factors that promote bacterial overgrowth and low stomach acid. Thank you for your continued support of Deadspin. Call your senator, she misses you. Disclaimer: You are leaving a Gizmodo Media Group, LLC website and going to a. Let me share my story, I’m sure it’s very similar to yours. My name is Alain Gonzalez and I’m a lot like you. Ever since I was in high school I was always the. Replace stomach acid, enzymes and nutrients that aid digestion and are necessary for health. Restore beneficial bacteria and a healthy mucosal lining in the gut. Reduce factors that promote bacterial overgrowth and low stomach acid. Carbohydrates. As we saw in Part II and Part III, a high carbohydrate diet promotes bacterial overgrowth. Bacterial overgrowth – in particular H. This creates a vicious cycle where bacterial overgrowth and low stomach acid reinforce each other in a continuous decline of digestive function. It follows, then, that a low- carb (LC) diet would reduce bacterial overgrowth. To my knowledge there have only been two small studies done to test this hypothesis. The results in both studies were overwhelmingly positive. The first study was performed by Professor Yancy and colleagues at Duke University. They enrolled five patients with severe GERD that also had a variety of other medical problems, such as diabetes. Each of these patients had failed several conventional GERD treatments before being enrolled in the study. In spite of the fact that some of these patients continued to drink, smoke and engage in other GERD- unfriendly habits, in every case the symptoms of GERD were completely eliminated within one week of adopting a very low carbohydrate (VLC) diet. The second study (PDF) was performed by Yancy and colleagues a few years later. This time they examined the effects of a VLC diet on eight obese subjects with severe GERD. They measured the esophageal p. H of the subjects at baseline before the study began using something called the Johnson- De. Meester score. This is a measurement of how much acid is getting back up into the esophagus, and thus an objective marker of how much reflux is occurring. They also used a self- administered questionnaire called the GSAS- ds to evaluate the frequency and severity of 1. GERD- related symptoms within the previous week. At the beginning of the diet, five of eight subjects had abnormal Johnson- De. Meester scores. All five of these patients showed a substantial decrease in their Johnson- De. Meester score (meaning less acid in the esophagus). Most remarkably, the magnitude of the decrease in Johnson- De. Meester scores is similar to what is reported with PPI treatment. In other words, in these five subjects a very low carbohydrate diet was just as effective as powerful acid suppressing drugs in keeping acid out of the esophagus. All eight individuals had evident improvement in their GSAS- ds scores. The GSAS- ds scores decreased from 1. What these numbers mean is that the patients all reported significant improvement in their GERD related symptoms. Therefore, there was both objective (Johnson- De. Meester) and subjective (GSAS- ds) improvement in this study. It’s important to note that obesity is an independent risk factor for GERD, because it increases intra- abdominal pressure and causes dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The advantage to a low- carb diet as a treatment for GERD for those who are overweight is that LC diets are also very effective for promoting weight loss. I don’t recommend VLC diets for extended periods of time, as they are unnecessary for most people. Once you have recovered your digestive function, a diet low to moderate in carbohydrates should be adequate to prevent a recurrence of symptoms. An alternative to a VLC is something called a “specific carbohydrate diet” (SCD), or the GAPS diet. In these two approaches it is not the amount of carbohydrates that is important, but the type of carbohydrates. The theory is that the longer chain carbohydrates (disaccharides and polysacharides) are the ones that feed bad bacteria in our guts, while short chain carbohydrates (monosacharides) don’t pose a problem. In practice what this means is that all grains, legumes and starchy vegetables should be eliminated, but fruits and certain non- starchy root vegetables (winter squash, rutabaga, turnips, celery root) can be eaten. These are not “low- carb” diets, per se, but there is reason to believe that they may be just as effective in treating heartburn and GERD. See the resources section below for books and websites about these diets, which have been used with dramatic success to treat everything from autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to Crohn’s disease. Another alternative to VLC that I increasingly use in my clinic is the Low FODMAP diet. FODMAPs are certain types of carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed by some people, particularly those with an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine (which, as you now know, tends to go hand- in- hand with heartburn). See this article and my book for more information. Be careful to avoid the processed low- carb foods sold in supermarkets. Instead, I suggest what is known as a “paleolithic” or “primal” approach to nutrition. Fructose and artificial sweeteners. As I pointed out in Part II, fructose and artificial sweeteners have been shown to increase bacterial overgrowth. Artificial sweeteners should be completely eliminated, and fructose (in processed form especially) should be reduced. Fiber. High fiber diets and bacterial overgrowth are a particularly dangerous mix. Remember, Almost all of the fiber and approximately 1. Carbohydrates that escape digestion become food for intestinal bacteria. Prebiotics, which can be helpful in re- establishing a healthy bacterial balance in some patients, should probably be avoided in patients with heartburn and GERD. Several studies show that fructo- oligosaccharides (prebiotics) increase the amount of gas produced in the gut. The other problem with fiber is that it can bind with nutrients and remove them from the body before they have a chance to be absorbed. This is particularly problematic in GERD sufferers, who may already be deficient in key nutrients due to long term hypochlorydria (low stomach acid). H. While I think it’s a contributing factor in some cases, the question of whether and how to treat it is less clear. There is some evidence that H. If this is true, complete eradication of H. Instead, a LC or specific carbohydrate diet is probably a better choice as it will simply reduce the bacterial load and bring the gut flora back into a state of relative balance. The exception to this may be in serious or long- standing cases of GERD that aren’t responding to a VLC or LC diet. In this situation, it may be worthwhile to get tested for H. Wright, author of Why Stomach Acid is Good For You, suggests using mastic (a resin from a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern variety of pistachio tree) to treat H. A 1. 99. 8 in vitrostudy in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that mastic killed several strains of H. Studies since then, including in vivo experiments, have shown mixed results. Mastic may be a good first- line therapy for H. The test is quite simple. A device called a Heidelberg capsule, which consists of a tiny p. H sensor and radio transmitter compressed into something resembling a vitamin capsule, is lowered into the stomach. When swallowed, the sensors in the capsule measure the p. H of the stomach contents and relay the findings via radio signal to a receiver located outside the body. In cases of mild to moderate heartburn, actual testing for stomach acid production at Dr. Wright’s Tahoma clinic shows that hypochlorydria occurs in over 9. In these cases, replacing stomach acid with HCL supplements is almost always successful. Although testing actual stomach acid levels is preferable, it is not strictly necessary. There is a reasonably reliable, “low- tech” method that can be performed at home to determine whether HCL supplementation will provide a benefit. To do this test, pick up some HCL capsules that contain pepsin or acid- stable protease. HCL should always be taken with pepsin or acid- stable protease because it is likely that if the stomach is not producing enough HCL, it is also not producing enough protein digesting enzymes. Note: HCL should never be taken (and this test should not be performed) by anyone who is also using any kind of anti- inflammatory medication such as corticosteroids (e. Motrin, Advil, etc.) or other NSAIDS. These drugs can damage the GI lining that supplementary HCL might aggravate, increasing the risk of gastric bleeding or ulcer. To minimize side effects, start with one 6. HCL w/pepsin in the early part of each meal. If there are no problems after two or three days, increase the dose to two capsules at the beginning of meals. Then after another two days increase to three capsules. Increase the dose gradually in this stepwise fashion until you feel a mild burning sensation. At that point, reduce the dosage to the previous number of capsules you were taking before you experienced burning and stay at that dosage. Over time you may find that you can continue to reduce the dosage, or you may also find that you may need to increase the dosage. In Dr. Wright’s clinic, most patients end up at a dose of 5- 7 6. In my experience, this dose is too high for many people. In fact, some have trouble with even a single 6. It's Nice And Quick And Clean. Thank you for your continued support of Deadspin. Get your crunchy fix with dried fruits. Frozen pineapples and frozen grapes make great snacks. Also frozen watermelon blended makes a great natural slushy. Today wasn’t as bad as I’d expected. Day 2- Eat nothing but vegetables (except corn or other starchy veggies). However, you do get to start the day with a baked potato (russet or sweet). You will LOVE having this baked potato trust me! I never thought I’d be so happy to eat a baked potato in the morning! I prefer a sweet potato. For breakfast, I dice my sweet potato into cubes, sprinkled with a little olive oil and cinnamon and roast it in the oven along with some bell peppers and onions. For lunch I do the cabbage soup and a salad sprinkled with salt, pepper and olive oil. This is actually pretty good. For dinner I do riced cauliflower topped with a stir fry of zucchini, roasted carrots, and bell peppers with light soy sauce (cheating). I snack on baked spinach chips. Today was ok. I had no problems with this day since I love meat and was happy to get it! I made turkey sausage patties for breakfast topped with tomatoes. For dinner I had more wonder soup, but I added turkey breakfast sausage to it and more tomatoes. I got tired of the soup on this day. Ugh!!
